Whether for individuals, small businesses, or non-profits, I recommend AVG antivirus software.
If you have a network of workstations, servers, and laptops, AVG antivirus network edition comes with (as in included for free) an admin control panel that will track the status of all of the AVG installations on your network. It can act as a central downloader which provides updates to your local systems and it also makes sure your systems are up-to-date. You can also use the console to "push" the installation of AVG out to your networked systems.
Other things I like about AVG antivirus:
- 2-year subscription with a low cost per system (depending on how many you buy for)
- Big discounts for non-profits
- No media needed--immediate download is available
- Not a resource pig (much lighter than Symantec or similar enterprise products)
- Scales well (1 to 100 systems work just fine!)
- Laptops can point to local server for updates and automatically fall back to AVG's update servers, if necessary
- All settings can be set on the console and automatically update stations
- AVG provides, for free, a version for personal use. It has a few limitations (some advanced options are greyed-out and cannot be changed and you can't use it with the admin console), but it is basically the same product as the network edition--I think providing this free version shows that the AVG company thinks beyond profit and is trying to create a better computing experience for everyone
I do have a few issues with AVG, but they aren't enough to keep me from recommending it:
- AVG insists on killing Radmin (any version) on a regular basis as a "Potentially Unwanted Program" (PUP) which means each time I upgrade Radmin I have to add it to the "PUP Exceptions" setting on the admin console and any standalone systems' settings
- Non-profit discounts require "offline" ordering and can take quite a few days to process--you'll have to decide if the discount is worth the wait
- The theme has gone all "vista" on us
I highly recommend AVG antivirus. It certainly works for me.
