Problem with SSL in IE6 Due to Corrupt User Profile

By steve - Posted on 08 June 2007

Anytime IE6 would attempt to go to an SSL site for a particular domain user, it would fail with a "page cannot be displayed" message. I tried several of the common solutions to SSL problems in IE without success...

  1. Is SSL enabled in Tools/Internet Options/Advanced?
  2. KB article 261328 didn't apply because the cipher was showing that it was 128 bit
  3. KB article 303807 didn't apply because the registry settings shown were fine
  4. KB article 870700 didn't apply because none of the issues described were a problem, except for the last one, "Create a new user profile"

Since none of these worked, but other users on that computer could access SSL sites, I decided to recreate the user profile.

I logged off the problematic user and logged in as Adminstrator and attempted to remove the problematic domain user, but the option to delete the domain user in My Computer/Properties/Advanced/User profiles was greyed out.

After more fooling around and not being able to delete the user profile, I ended up rebooting the computer, logged back in as administrator, then I COULD delete the user. The problem is that apparently, the registry was left open for that problem user when I had simply logged off and back on as administrator (probably due to the profile being corrupted).
