Problem with Embassy Wave Trust Suite on Dell D620

By steve - Posted on 23 January 2009

A few weeks ago, my finger scanner stopped working on my Dell D620 laptop. I use the Embassy Wave Trust Suite that came with the scanner on my laptop to login multiple times a day, but for some reason, probably a Microsoft automatic update, it stopped working.

When I finally had a few minutes to work on it, I downloaded the latest software from Dell and tried upgrading. That didn't work because I was going from an older version of the Suite and the newest version refused to go from 1.x to 2.x. So, I uninstalled the old version and started the install again. It ran for awhile, but right near the end, it threw the error:

"The Wave Installer could not install the prerequisite Wave Infrastructure. Reason: Could not run installer. Fatal error during installation."

Then it proceeded to roll back the entire software installation. There was an error in eventvwr.msc that reported:

Source: MsiInstaller
Type: Error
Event ID: 11722

Product: Wave Infrastructure Installer -- Error 1722.There is a problem
with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the
setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or
package vendor. Action _582B32D2_ECE6_4E0C_A2E7

Common\ToolkitCustomAction.exe, command: Install
"/TARGETDIR=C:\Program Files\Wave Systems Corp\Common
\\" /ForceUninstall=true /LibPath="C:\Program Files\Wave Systems
Corp\Common"

I found this Microsoft article about repairing the installer, so I tried it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315353
and it didn't worked, but it was worth a try.

The gist of the article is that you should:

  1. Log on to your computer as an administrator.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
  4. At the command prompt, type: msiexec.exe /unregister, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.

Then make sure SYSTEM has rights to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive and then reboot.

Ultimately, the problem seems to have been with a version conflict or a partial uninstall of the NTRU and Preboot Manager programs that are part of the EMBASSY WAVE package. I ended up using the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 to clear out the NTRU and Preboot Manager installation files. This allowed the installer programs to go ahead and complete without thinking there were version problems with programs that were uninstalled, but left behind registry entries that confused the installers.
