Improving Your Zimbra Connector Email Experience While Traveling

By steve - Posted on 29 October 2008

I had a client that ran into a problem where he couldn't receive new emails due to a large email with photo attachments slowing things down.

Laptop Zimbra users have the option of only downloading email headers, then they can pick which emails they want to download and read. You normally don't have to do this, but, while traveling, you may find that your connection does not deliver the speed you are used to. When that happens, you can improve your email experience by changing the email mode from "download everything" to "download headers only".

Here's how...

  • Start Outlook 2003
  • Click Tools/Send-Receive/Send Receive Settings/Define Send Receive Groups
  • Select "All Accounts" and click Edit...
  • Click on Zimbra Collabor...
  • Where it says "Folder Options", change "Download complete item including attachments" to "Download headers only"
  • Click OK
  • Click Close

When you send/receive the next time, you'll get just the header information (from, subject, date, and a bit of the message) for your messages. If you want to download the entire message, got to your Inbox and right click on the item, then select the option to download the entire message. Note: Deleting any partially downloaded messages will still delete the entire message on the server.

You can flip email modes back and forth, using the instructions above, depending on your connection quality.
